New Finds!!!

We have only been back at the “Cemetery Site” for a short time and already we are finding some great stuff!

IMG_1043It is a little hard to make out, but if you look at the top left of the trench, you can see yellow subsoil.  You can see the same if you look at the bottom.  If you project out the lines, it makes a rectangle.  Currently, we believe this is a bulkhead entrance into a cellar because it would appear that this feature occurs both inside and outside the structural outline.  The next unit should tell us if this hypothesis is correct.  The answer is always in the next unit!

If you look at the top right of the trench, you will see some stones.  The picture below is what is under one of those stones:  a beautiful bottle neck fragment with applied lip.  Are we taking it??? Only if our specialists consider it threatened if we do not. Otherwise, it is for future archaeologists.  Because this is a nationally significant site we decided to not excavate into features. Our goal is only to get the structural shape and dimensions for interpretive and educational purposes, leaving the site almost entirely intact.  It is the hardest thing, but sometimes, the right thing.
