Upcoming New Volunteer Orientation

New Volunteer Orientation

Date: Friday, January 30th

Time: 10:00 am

Please RSVP by noon on Wednesday, January 28th by writing cartarchlab@live.com

The orientation is an introduction to archaeology in Fairfax County including volunteering with the Cultural Resource Management & Protection Branch (CRMPB) of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA).

The Orientation has two parts. The volunteer orientation power point introduces some basics of archaeology, archaeological field & laboratory methods, ethics in preservation, the Colchester Archaeological Research Team (CART), and CRMPB. The power point usually lasts about an hour.

For the next part of the orientation, new volunteers are asked to jump in and do some archaeological lab work. Orientation lab work is designed to familiarize volunteers with the types of artifacts found at our current projects. Usually, new volunteers will wash artifacts. Before scheduling for the field, we require at least a couple of hours in the lab.

If you would like to volunteer in either the field or the lab, please sign up for a New Volunteer Orientation.

It is possible to wave both the orientation and lab work based on experience. Please contact us at cartarchlab@live.com to discuss this possibility if you desire to wave the orientation. If you have ever taken a new volunteer orientation with us, you do not have to take it again. Please feel free to contact us to schedule volunteer time. Please specify if you wish to volunteer in the field or lab.
