So the time has finally come to say goodnight to the “Pound Foundation”. Open for almost a year, CART is backfilling the large foundation to preserve it for future excavations. This large foundation was first discovered in 1985 by GMU students, and reopened by FCPA in 2011. Backfilling features prevent them from deteriorating due to frost heave, and pressure of rain puddles on the tarps stressing the fragile foundations. In the photo archaeologist Megan Veness is covering the stone foundation with plastic with holes poked in it to help with drainage. In the middle of next week, FCPA grounds crew will bring in dirt to fill the excavated portion of the foundation. During field season 2013, CART will explore more into the foundation and reveal more secrets of the town of Colchester hidden for over 100 years.
