Getting to Know the Artifacts IV

The site “What’s the Point” , will lead you through steps to identify a point. It is from the Ohio Historical Society and focuses on Ohio’s prehistory. Some point types overlap with our area of Virginia while others don’t.

The quartz point pictured here was found during test excavations at Colchester.

DAACS Stylistic Elements is hard to beat for identifying characteristics of ceramic decoration. The terminology is often different from what is used either in the CART lab or in other labs, but the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery has great information.  Look for the stylistic elements linked from the page “About the Database”.

Rarely, we do find exactly the same design as pictured in DAACS. We did with the ceramic sherd pictured here (Botanical Band # 32).
