Getting to Know the Artifacts

One invaluable resource for identifying artifacts in this region is created by the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab.  Jef Pat’s Diagnostic Artifacts in Maryland focuses mainly on ceramics, but has been expanding their small finds section.

Jef Pat’s Diagnostic Artifacts in Maryland website is http://www.jefpat.org/diagnostic/Index.htm
The ceramics found in Maryland are very similar to the ceramics found at Colchester, VA. One of the great things about their website is that they include both Historic and Prehistoric ceramics.
The pictures above are not from the Jef Pat website. You may recognize the prehistoric sherd pictured on the left from early in our excavations at Colchester. The picture on the right is of historic tin-glazed earthenware sherds found from the Colchester Colonial town site.
